• Garth and Maud want to say Thank You to everyone who came to see them in Lund, Sweden and special thanks to Daniel Bengtson, who encouraged them to become a part of Studentafton history. It was a memorable visit. Garth's lecture was very interesting and informative. Many members of the audience were writing notes as he spoke. The concert followed the lecture and began with "It Makes No Difference" in memory of Rick Danko (many tears of love in the audience). Garth's solo pieces were especially magnificent. The hall was filled to capacity with a most appreciative audience who gave standing ovations. Garth and Maud said that the Lund area of the world is a very tempting place to live. The water is so pure that it needs no chemicals whatsoever, the air is sweet, the cobblestone streets are clean, and the people friendly. Fyi: The entire lecture and concert was filmed for television so look for an update soon! A few newspaper reviews in the paper will be translated and we´ll let you know about an interview also.
• Jan Hoiberg (The Band webmaster and friend) visited Lund, Sweden to catch Garth´s lecture and concert "Music According To Garth." Please visit his What`s New page to read about it and to see the first online photos of this very special event: http://theband.hiof.no/band_pictures/

• Press Release announcing St. Ann's Warehouse Gala Benefit celebrating another banner year (its 28th) on April 2, 2008, when Hal Willner returns for the American live premiere of one of his most beloved projects: STAY AWAKE, which mines the enchanting and at times sardonic Vintage Disney Songbook. An amalgam of the bizarre and the familiar, Stay Awake will be performed, in signature Willner fashion, by a broad spectrum of artists spanning pop, rock, jazz and the avant-garde: performers on the original album Terry Adams of NRBQ, Marshall Allen of Sun Ra Arkestra, Maud and Garth Hudson, Natalie Merchant, Suzanne Vega and the voice of Ken Nordine. The concert at St. Ann¹s Warehouse will also feature Steve Buscemi, David Byrne, Gavin Friday, Beth Orton, Richard Strange and Martha Wainwright. For Gala Tickets: www.stannswarehouse.org or call Inga Glodowski at St. Anne's Warehouse: 718.834.8794 x 11 or inga@stannswarehouse.org. It is the 20th Anniversary Concert of Stay Awake. • Last night at El Mocambo in Toronto... After midnight Garth was treated to a presentation of a few Band songs by some of Curve Music's artists which included members of Peter Katz's band and The Dunes. Before the night was over Garth joined in on "The Shape I'm In", "Chest Fever" and "The Weight". Garth and Maud forded through quite a storm to get there from New York and enjoyed every minute with Curve Music's showcase for Canada Music Week in Toronto. Many cell phones were recording images and sounds. Let's hope some get posted on the Internet.
• This is an informative article in the Kingston Whig-Standard in Ontario, Canada and includes news about Garth: Bob Lovelace is getting help in musical, if not high, places. The Queen's University instructor and Ardoch Algonquin First Nations leader was sentenced to six months in jail and fined $25,000 in mid-February for contempt of court. The sentence was a result of the Algonquin protest against a uranium prospecting company's drilling north of Sharbot Lake... Westport-area musician Paul McKay, a neighbour of Lovelace's, is donating the proceeds from his freshly minted CD, Evening Bird, to help the jailed protester. Interesting mention of Garth recording on Mr. McKay's new CD... and Willie P. Bennett, whose memorial is today in Peterborough, Ontario... "Before recording his part in a song, Hudson would go off to tinker with it in a secluded part of the studio. He'd go to the grand piano and work through the tune," McKay says. "First, I'd hear my tune in a Bach variation, then he'd morph it into ragtime, then swing and then a '40s Broadway show tune before he'd finally do it the way he'd record it."
• "We're doing it in three song segments, with four different palettes, tastes and perspectives. One is a trio setting recorded in Woodstock with Colin, myself and Garth Hudson from The Band on accordion. It's exotic and fantastically inspiring." - Paul Reddick speaking to The Edmonton Journal about his newest album to be released in April.
March 6
• There is an interview with Paul Reddick today in Edmondton, Alberta's VUE WEEKLY. Garth recorded with Mr. Reddick last Monday at Levon Helm Studios, but didn't play any keyboards as assumed in the article. In actuality... three of the tracks for his new album are done as a trio with Colin Linden on twelve-string guitar, Reddick on harmonica, and Garth on accordion.
• The CALENDAR has been revised to include Garth's participation this Saturday on a Canadian music panel in Toronto.
March 3

Remember it’s five hours later in England than in New York!
The programme can be listened to live on the internet and should be made available for a week on the programme's website.

• We've been informed that there are Russian web sites out there offering massive amounts of MP3s for sale, including recent albums from Levon Helm and Garth Hudson. Please note that it is both illegal and dangerous to buy anything from those sites:
- The music has been copied without permission. The artists and record companies do not receive any money from the sale of MP3s. Buying music from these Russian sites is a criminal act, the equivalent of buying stolen goods from illegal traders.
- The MP3 trade is run by the Russian mafia. If you input your credit card details into one of these web sites, you're at high risk of becoming a victim of credit card fraud.

• The latest issue of UK music magazine Uncut (October 2007) does a guide to the 50 Best Gigs Ever. The Band come in at #18, and the reviewer is Richard Thompson:
#18 THE BAND
The Royal Albert Hall, June 2nd, 1971
I went to this show with my colleagues from Fairport. We were already fans of The Band from their first couple of albums. We loved them for their rootsiness, they seamlessly blended Americana styles -- blues, country, rock, R&B, Appalachian -- and regurgitated it with their own unique sound. Live, the musicianship was even more apparent. They had three lead singers, a killer rhythm section in Danko and Helm, one of the great guitarists in Robbie Robertson (see him wipe the floor with Clapton in The Last Waltz) and presiding over proceeedings, on a riser at the back, Garth Hudson, who eschewed the Hammond organ in favour of the more distinctive Lowrey with its 'glide' effect.
They played superbly with great balance. Arrangements were mostly as per record, except at the encore. At one point during 'Chest Fever,' Garth switched the organ output to a speaker at the back of the hall. Surround sound in 1971!
I saw The Band a couple of times more, but never again from such a good seat (we were right across from the stage in the lower loggia). And the first time is usually the one that slays you with all that sensory input. There was considerable cultural impact for us, too -- these guys had short hair and suits, totally against the styles of the day -- quite refreshing.
-- Richard Thompson

Mr. Gilbert took a few photographs during the session. One of the photographs is included in his show in the Solo Gallery at the Woodstock Artists Association & Museum. It opened last weekend (August 11th) and will run through August 26th. Sorry not to let you know sooner. This photo was also used on the invitations.

• Daniel Lanois' new film, "Here Is What Is” premieres at the Toronto International Film Festival in September, featuring appearances by actor/singer Billy Bob Thornton, The Band’s Garth Hudson, Willie Nelson, U2, Sinead O’Connor, Aaron Neville and Emmylou Harris, among others. The feature-length film documents Lanois on trips to Morocco (where he was recording with Eno and U2) and Shreveport, La. (with drummer Brian Blade and his father’s powerful gospel singing), and captures a rare and intimate piano performance from Garth Hudson (who was working with Daniel on his latest not-released-yet album). "Here Is What Is" is a dissection of Mr. Lanois’ creative process as a producer, composer and songwriter. The film reveals the mental legwork behind his collaborations with the likes of Peter Gabriel, Bob Dylan and U2. Adam Vollick’s cinematography involves you in the creative process in an unforgettable experience. Kudos to Daniel Lanois, Adam Vollick, and Adam Samuels.

• GARTH and MAUD are honored to be participating at TRUCK 10... the 10th Anniversary of the Truck Festival in Oxford, England on July 22nd. Duo, Solo, including a few The Band songs with members of Goldrush, and others. It will be a great finale to a special weekend at Hill Farm. This event is especially dear to the Hudsons because of it's shining example of how a small festival can benefit several charities by bringing thousands of people together to enjoy many genres of music. Always a good formula for happiness! It will be documented.
FESTIVAL IS SOLD OUT. Thank you!

• We have lost a dear friend this morning... keyboardist RICHARD BELL. Our thoughts and prayers are with Richard's family. As we reflect on his words during this past year, we heard courage, humour, brilliance, and a positive attitude. He had a deliberate and kind spirit. Richard became part of the soul of The Band and will always be remembered as a beautiful player with tremendous force and accuracy. Thank you, Richard, for being so generous with your talent and for your great heart. We love you like crazy! ...Garth and Maud Hudson. • "New Interview with The Band" in the June 2007 issue of MOJO. It has been released in UK already. It has a list of "100 Records That Changed The World." The Music From Big Pink is #81 with notes by Bernie Taupin. Will Hodgkinson interviewed Garth Hudson and Robbie Robertson separately. Here is one excerpt from Garth: "Dylan would be coming round the house three or four days a week, and there was a little typewriter on the coffee table in the living room that he would bash away on while we were in the basement. Richard wrote a song about that, 'Upstairs, Downstairs.' As far as I know that’s one of those few sacred Basement Tapes still in the locker."
