• Disclaimer:
It was brought to my attention that the announcement by Curve Music appears to be connected with my concerts in Norway and might be to promote my recent recordings in Toronto. In fact my project with Curve has no connection to this month's Norwegian tour. My wife Maud and I are in Norway to celebrate the release of our friend's album: Jeffrey & The Free Radikals (as previously posted). I will be performing my own compositions, pieces from my solo albums and include favored Band songs.
I look forward to performing in the near future with artists who have been recording with me in Toronto. An announcement will be posted here as soon as it is planned. And of course we will make an official announcement about the tribute album when a release date is set along with some background about why and how this special tribute was done. Curve Music has been so excited that they jumped the gun a little bit with their announcement. But, we are glad you now know. I'm proud of it and can hardly wait for you to hear versions of Chest Fever, Tears of Rage, Ain't Got No Home, but we want to leave some surprises for you to discover when it's time arrives.
Thank you for your many inquiries. We are excited about Norway and look forward to sharing my favorite Band songs with you soon.
   Best Wishes,
   Garth Hudson

• Jonathon Katz sent the music for a recording Garth co-produced for Don Crawford in 1959 to Jan Høiberg at The Band website. It wasn't the original label, but is the session. You can listen to those recordings at The Band website, but you hear the B side before the A side. Maybe other labels switched sides? Here are Garth's own words: "I met Don Crawford from Sarnia (Ontario) in London, Ontario and wrote lead sheets for some of his new songs. Don's manager Reg Veriol, put Don and me on a plane to New York City where we met with George Goldner who was president of the Gone record label (the original label for this session). Goldner and his assistant Lou Gally arranged to record "Sleeping Beauty" (the A side) as well as "Beauty and The Beast" (the B side). The musicians and background singers were all New York professionals and the recording was performed "LIVE," no overdubs. I co-produced this session and did not play on it. Al Williams played the piano, Mickey Baker on guitar, and Everett Barksdale played bass." Garth remembers telling Mickey "Guitar" Baker, "Mickey, would you turn up the treble on your guitar?" Garth still has the original lead sheets in his files and has the date written as "Wed. Sept. 59" without mentioning which week. Garth was 22 years and 1 month old.

• After their car blew up and died on the Canadian side of their journey north from New York, Garth and Maud have been enjoying their stay in the Penetanguishene / Midland area on the Georgian Bay in Ontario. Garth received two government awards siting great milestones in his life (details to come). The days following the success of their Penetanguishene Music and Movies Festival concert at King's Wharf on Saturday have been filled with activity: An all-nighter of fine folk music, Garth played organ and Maud sang with the Vox Huronia Chamber Choir at St. Paul's United Church, Midland. It was broadcast live-on-air by IndiCan Radio in Toronto. Maud did a short interview about Garth there with Joe Chisholm and Douglas Graham of IndieCan, there was a late-night feast and music at the Explorers Cafe afterward, then a delightful 2 AM trek in the light of the full moon and the scent of apple blossoms to The Carriage House Gallery. Before their departure Garth lectured and performed for Music In The Schools at Penetanguishene Secondary School and Elmvale High School.

• During their concert in Penetanguishene Garth and Maud were joined by Garth Douglas of Festival Express and his Wye River Band. They also invited Karla Crawford, Scott Cooper, Tannis Slimmon, and Michael Yates (who played cello). See video [here] with all their guests. Many thanks to Joe Ouellette who shot the video.

• Garth and Maud want to say Thank You to everyone who came to see them in Lund, Sweden and special thanks to Daniel Bengtson, who encouraged them to become a part of Studentafton history. It was a memorable visit. Garth's lecture was very interesting and informative. Many members of the audience were writing notes as he spoke. The concert followed the lecture and began with "It Makes No Difference" in memory of Rick Danko (many tears of love in the audience). Garth's solo pieces were especially magnificent. The hall was filled to capacity with a most appreciative audience who gave standing ovations. Garth and Maud said that the Lund area of the world is a very tempting place to live. The water is so pure that it needs no chemicals whatsoever, the air is sweet, the cobblestone streets are clean, and the people friendly. Fyi: The entire lecture and concert was filmed for television so look for an update soon! A few newspaper reviews in the paper will be translated and we´ll let you know about an interview also.

Jan Hoiberg (The Band webmaster and friend) visited Lund, Sweden to catch Garth´s lecture and concert "Music According To Garth." Please visit his What`s New page to read about it and to see the first online photos of this very special event: http://theband.hiof.no/band_pictures/

Press Release announcing St. Ann's Warehouse Gala Benefit celebrating another banner year (its 28th) on April 2, 2008, when Hal Willner returns for the American live premiere of one of his most beloved projects: STAY AWAKE, which mines the enchanting and at times sardonic Vintage Disney Songbook. An amalgam of the bizarre and the familiar, Stay Awake will be performed, in signature Willner fashion, by a broad spectrum of artists spanning pop, rock, jazz and the avant-garde: performers on the original album Terry Adams of NRBQ, Marshall Allen of Sun Ra Arkestra, Maud and Garth Hudson, Natalie Merchant, Suzanne Vega and the voice of Ken Nordine. The concert at St. Ann¹s Warehouse will also feature Steve Buscemi, David Byrne, Gavin Friday, Beth Orton, Richard Strange and Martha Wainwright. For Gala Tickets: www.stannswarehouse.org or call Inga Glodowski at St. Anne's Warehouse: 718.834.8794 x 11 or inga@stannswarehouse.org. It is the 20th Anniversary Concert of Stay Awake. • Today is the ASCAP panel We Create Music: The Kings of Songwriting 2:45pm to 3:45pm. Get your passes and check Garth out in the concert hall at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel. See CALENDAR.

• Last night at El Mocambo in Toronto... After midnight Garth was treated to a presentation of a few Band songs by some of Curve Music's artists which included members of Peter Katz's band and The Dunes. Before the night was over Garth joined in on "The Shape I'm In", "Chest Fever" and "The Weight". Garth and Maud forded through quite a storm to get there from New York and enjoyed every minute with Curve Music's showcase for Canada Music Week in Toronto. Many cell phones were recording images and sounds. Let's hope some get posted on the Internet.

• This is an informative article in the Kingston Whig-Standard in Ontario, Canada and includes news about Garth: Bob Lovelace is getting help in musical, if not high, places. The Queen's University instructor and Ardoch Algonquin First Nations leader was sentenced to six months in jail and fined $25,000 in mid-February for contempt of court. The sentence was a result of the Algonquin protest against a uranium prospecting company's drilling north of Sharbot Lake... Westport-area musician Paul McKay, a neighbour of Lovelace's, is donating the proceeds from his freshly minted CD, Evening Bird, to help the jailed protester. Interesting mention of Garth recording on Mr. McKay's new CD... and Willie P. Bennett, whose memorial is today in Peterborough, Ontario... "Before recording his part in a song, Hudson would go off to tinker with it in a secluded part of the studio. He'd go to the grand piano and work through the tune," McKay says. "First, I'd hear my tune in a Bach variation, then he'd morph it into ragtime, then swing and then a '40s Broadway show tune before he'd finally do it the way he'd record it."

• "We're doing it in three song segments, with four different palettes, tastes and perspectives. One is a trio setting recorded in Woodstock with Colin, myself and Garth Hudson from The Band on accordion. It's exotic and fantastically inspiring." - Paul Reddick speaking to The Edmonton Journal about his newest album to be released in April.

March 6

• There is an interview with Paul Reddick today in Edmondton, Alberta's VUE WEEKLY. Garth recorded with Mr. Reddick last Monday at Levon Helm Studios, but didn't play any keyboards as assumed in the article. In actuality... three of the tracks for his new album are done as a trio with Colin Linden on twelve-string guitar, Reddick on harmonica, and Garth on accordion.

• The CALENDAR has been revised to include Garth's participation this Saturday on a Canadian music panel in Toronto.

March 3

• On June 10th, Martha Wainwright will release her third studio album, I Know You're Married But I've Got Feelings Too. More info [here] at Filter Magazine.

THE BAND honored with GRAMMY LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD!!! THE BAND (Rick Danko, Levon Helm, Garth Hudson, Richard Manuel, and Robbie Robertson) -- As one of the most popular and influential rock bands in the late '60s and early '70s, THE BAND produced music that crossed generational and historical borders. They fused various musical elements including old country and early rock and roll, though their rhythm section often evoked the Stax and Motown sound. THE BAND, in 2004, was ranked No. 50 on Rolling Stone's list of 100 Greatest Artists of All Time and they were inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

• You can catch an interview with Garth Hudson “TODAY.” BBC Radio 2's Radcliffe/Maconie show is doing a spot with Garth. It's a very popular mid evening show on the UK's biggest station. It will be part of a feature called Show And Tell, a short program where Garth picks and talks about a piece of music. The piece he has selected is BLUES FOR THE RED BOY. Remember it’s five hours later in England than in New York!

The programme can be listened to live on the internet and should be made available for a week on the programme's website.

• From The Band Website:

- Only one more day until Garth and Maud Hudson's first concert at the legendary 100 Club in London, UK. Our friend Simon Harper, editor of Clash Magazine, is doing an interview with Garth during their visit to London, in the afternoon of Wednesday 26th. Simon would like you, the web site visitors, to suggest questions to be put to Garth. You may send suggestions directly to Simon by e-mail.

• We've been informed that there are Russian web sites out there offering massive amounts of MP3s for sale, including recent albums from Levon Helm and Garth Hudson. Please note that it is both illegal and dangerous to buy anything from those sites:

- The music has been copied without permission. The artists and record companies do not receive any money from the sale of MP3s. Buying music from these Russian sites is a criminal act, the equivalent of buying stolen goods from illegal traders.

- The MP3 trade is run by the Russian mafia. If you input your credit card details into one of these web sites, you're at high risk of becoming a victim of credit card fraud.

• The latest issue of UK music magazine Uncut (October 2007) does a guide to the 50 Best Gigs Ever. The Band come in at #18, and the reviewer is Richard Thompson:

#18 THE BAND

The Royal Albert Hall, June 2nd, 1971

I went to this show with my colleagues from Fairport. We were already fans of The Band from their first couple of albums. We loved them for their rootsiness, they seamlessly blended Americana styles -- blues, country, rock, R&B, Appalachian -- and regurgitated it with their own unique sound. Live, the musicianship was even more apparent. They had three lead singers, a killer rhythm section in Danko and Helm, one of the great guitarists in Robbie Robertson (see him wipe the floor with Clapton in The Last Waltz) and presiding over proceeedings, on a riser at the back, Garth Hudson, who eschewed the Hammond organ in favour of the more distinctive Lowrey with its 'glide' effect.

They played superbly with great balance. Arrangements were mostly as per record, except at the encore. At one point during 'Chest Fever,' Garth switched the organ output to a speaker at the back of the hall. Surround sound in 1971!

I saw The Band a couple of times more, but never again from such a good seat (we were right across from the stage in the lower loggia). And the first time is usually the one that slays you with all that sensory input. There was considerable cultural impact for us, too -- these guys had short hair and suits, totally against the styles of the day -- quite refreshing.

-- Richard Thompson

• GARTH HUDSON will be joining DANIEL LANOIS, Brian Blade and others in concert! The world premiere of Daniel Lanois' feature film HERE IS WHAT IS on Sunday night (Sept. 9) at the Toronto International Film Festival will be followed by two Lanois performances at THE GREAT HALL in Toronto on Sept. 10 and 11. The new Lanois disc likely will be called Here Is What Is -- based on the Jamaican proverb "don't look to tomorrow, look to right now," explained Lanois -- and released next March. Garth is in the film and on four tracks of the album. Tickets for the concerts are available at all Ticketmaster outlets or by calling (416) 870-8000 or online at www.ticketmaster.ca

• Garth was recording at the Clubhouse recording studio in Rhinebeck (a year or so ago) with Rick Gilbert for his film Hammond Heroes (still in production). Mr. Gilbert took a few photographs during the session. One of the photographs is included in his show in the Solo Gallery at the Woodstock Artists Association & Museum. It opened last weekend (August 11th) and will run through August 26th. Sorry not to let you know sooner. This photo was also used on the invitations.

Daniel Lanois' new film, "Here Is What Is” premieres at the Toronto International Film Festival in September, featuring appearances by actor/singer Billy Bob Thornton, The Band’s Garth Hudson, Willie Nelson, U2, Sinead O’Connor, Aaron Neville and Emmylou Harris, among others. The feature-length film documents Lanois on trips to Morocco (where he was recording with Eno and U2) and Shreveport, La. (with drummer Brian Blade and his father’s powerful gospel singing), and captures a rare and intimate piano performance from Garth Hudson (who was working with Daniel on his latest not-released-yet album). "Here Is What Is" is a dissection of Mr. Lanois’ creative process as a producer, composer and songwriter. The film reveals the mental legwork behind his collaborations with the likes of Peter Gabriel, Bob Dylan and U2. Adam Vollick’s cinematography involves you in the creative process in an unforgettable experience. Kudos to Daniel Lanois, Adam Vollick, and Adam Samuels.

• We have lost a dear friend this morning... keyboardist RICHARD BELL. Our thoughts and prayers are with Richard's family. As we reflect on his words during this past year, we heard courage, humour, brilliance, and a positive attitude. He had a deliberate and kind spirit. Richard became part of the soul of The Band and will always be remembered as a beautiful player with tremendous force and accuracy. Thank you, Richard, for being so generous with your talent and for your great heart. We love you like crazy! ...Garth and Maud Hudson. • "New Interview with The Band" in the June 2007 issue of MOJO. It has been released in UK already. It has a list of "100 Records That Changed The World." The Music From Big Pink is #81 with notes by Bernie Taupin. Will Hodgkinson interviewed Garth Hudson and Robbie Robertson separately. Here is one excerpt from Garth: "Dylan would be coming round the house three or four days a week, and there was a little typewriter on the coffee table in the living room that he would bash away on while we were in the basement. Richard wrote a song about that, 'Upstairs, Downstairs.' As far as I know that’s one of those few sacred Basement Tapes still in the locker."

Tommy Spurlock, Luke Powers and their band, Spicewood Seven, have released a new liberal-oriented country-rock CD called KAKISTOCRACY, which is defined as "Government by the least qualified or most unprincipled citizens." This is dance-able protest: Americana music for an America gone wrong. GARTH recorded a solo organ track, "Garth's Dox." ... the theme of Ultimate Redemption is represented by a performance on a Nashville church organ by Garth Hudson ... Lyrics and samples [here].

Not so sad news about Richard Bell:

Richard Bell was released from hospital a few days ago and has been resting at home with his sister and mother. We spoke with him this evening and can tell you that he is definitely in good spirits. It is planned for him to return to the hospital to begin heavy doses of chemotherapy this coming Wednesday.

A little background here: The 2 spots of cancer discovered were diagnosed as one form of cancer. That’s good because it is easier to concentrate on one type even though it is in two spots.

The chemotherapy is expected to be successful along with bone marrow transplant later. Some of his own marrow will be cleaned-up and introduced back into his body. Richard said his cancer then should be clean afterward.

Richard thanks everyone for their prayers and good wishes and asks that you turn any fears and worry into positive thoughts. He stated very emphatically, “I am not going to lose this battle!”

*Richard Bell – keyboardist with The Band, Ronnie Hawkins and The Hawks, Janis Joplin’s Full Tilt Boogie Band, and Blackie and The Rodeo Kings.

An update on "Sneaky" Pete Kleinow here. We would like to pass on a note from Pete’s daughter, Anita:

"I want all the fans, musicians and media to know that my father was diagnosed with Alzheimer's about a year ago. It hit him so hard and fast that he is now living in a skilled nursing facility. He would enjoy receiving a card, photo or note from you."
-- Anita Kleinow (daughter)

Please no phone calls or emails. Sneaky's mailing address is:

Sneaky Pete Kleinow
c/o The Oakes
450 Hayes St.
Petaluma, CA 94952

* "Sneaky" Pete Kleinow - pedal steel guitar wizard, original member of the Flying Burrito Brothers, and award-winning animator.

*Pete and Garth played together in The Shutouts in the 1980s, with Jo-El Sonnier when he lived in Los Angeles, with Greg Harris in The Bandini Brothers, and most recently in Burrito Deluxe.

• Garth and Maud played the Hamilton Music Scene Festival with their awesome band The Best! on Saturday (More details to follow).

They also played one song, It Makes No Difference, on Sunday at the Awards Ceremony. (Webmaster Note: I talked briefly on the phone yesterday to an excited Maud, and she told me that Garth's intro to the song was the best she had ever heard him or anyone play the piano. And they filmed it!)

Daniel Lanois won several awards at this ceremony and was surprised when Garth and public affairs director Gordon Forstner of the Defasco steel company co-presented him with a Lifetime Achievement Award. In addition, U2 interrupted their concert in Atlanta to pay tribute to Danny Boy (See story here). The ever gracious Daniel Lanois, upon accepting the award for Best Instrumental surprised Garth by giving him the award instead after saying something like "This is Garth Hudson's Award."

• Our friend, Steven Leckie (of the Viletones) just gave Garth a heads up on this week's 5-star review in Rolling Stone magazine about the Band Box Set, it says:

"......Robbie Robertson, of course was the group's lead guitartist and primary songwriter, but this set makes vividly clear what an extraordinary ensemble the Band were. As musicians and vocalists drummer Levon Helm, pianist Richard Manuel and bassist Rick Danko were somehow able both to evoke highly distinctive moods and characters and to disappear into these songs' meticulous arrangements. Organist Garth Hudson is a constant wonder, a never-ending font of jaw-dropping musical ideas. "Genetic Method," his lengthy introduction to "Chest Fever" is only his most obvious moment of mastery."

Magnus Høiberg returned home to Norway recently from England where he competed in a turntablist competition event called Battle for World Supremacy, where two and two DJs "battle it out", and the winner of the battle qualifies for the next round until there is only one winner left.

Magnus drew the reigning 30-year old European Champ from the U.K. in his first round, and lost. But, most important, the 11 judges scored his performance 5 to 6, which confirms that he now, at the age of 17, has technical skills on the decks matching the best in the world... And he had a "great" time!

He is now working on his next EP. We are proud of him and wish all the best with his chosen path. We think he is fantastic! Magnus is son to Jan Høiberg, grand webmaster of The Band website.

August 28 at The Bearsville Theatre.

July 26

• The Hudsons received a late-night phone call from Boston Saturday,
the 23rd after 1 AM. Egads! Who is this guy? Well, it turned out to be
the group Brave Combo from Denton, Texas. They received last year's
Grammy for best Polka album of 2004. It was quite funny. They called
from the stage at Johnny D's in Boston. The 200 people in the
audience had fun with all this... especially after Garth went ahead and
got on the phone. The polka they played before hanging up sounded
great through the phone’s own sounds that were the result of the high
dbs. Texans really like a good time... so do Bostonians!

• We have lost a very dear friend this past week... John Herald.
Garth has enjoyed playing with him from time to time. Sometimes
with Paul Geremia. It was really something to hear all the storytelling
and enjoying an abundance of laughter with John. He was brilliant. He
was talented. He was a proud man and a private man. He was a fine
songwriter, singer and guitarist. He was a pleasure to know. We were
all blessed to have known John Herald. May he rest in peace. Please
visit John’s website to see part of his life’s work: JohnHerald.com

• Garth recorded a few songs with the group Blueberry Hill in
Barcelona, Spain. They have now released their first CD titled
"Thanks!" Check them out (MP3s too!): goodsoundsmusic.com
We will post more about Blueberry Hill when we get more pages up
and running at this website.

• Garth went to Nashville last January to record with Sweden's Willy
Clay Band
on a great, new album titled “Rebecca Drive.” Garth enjoyed
working with them and their producer, Will Kimbrough. Will won the
"instrumentalist of the year" award at the AMA awards in September
2004. The album will be released August 15th.

July 18

their show for some energy and heart.
